Day 47 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska 6/28/14 - Day Trip to Homer AK

This morning we said our goodbyes to Chuck & Kathy as they were going to Soldotna.  Jesse had to move his rig to a different site due to electric problems at the site.

Later, Jesse & Ginger and Bob & I went to a Farmers Market in Ninilchik.  It didn't have much so we went to Homer.  On the way, we stopped at a lookout area.  From there, we took several pictures of the mountains, volcanos, Cook Inlet, and could even see Homer Spit (a peninsula at Homer).

We stopped at a RV Park along the Cook Inlet in Homer to visit some of Ginger & Jesse's friends.  We visited with these nice folks for a while and then drove to Homer Spit.

Homer Spit is a peninsula that has the Cook Inlet on one side and the Gulf of Alaska on the other.  It has a Fish Factory on the end where they process fish commercially, a huge marina/docking area, fish charter businesses, shops, condos, restaurants, RV & tent parking areas right next to the water, and more. We ate a late lunch at the Harbor Grill.  It was a very busy place today and a beautiful day to be busy...sun shining bright and few clouds in the sky...perfect weather for Alaska.

After leaving Homer Spits, we stopped at Anchor Point, which is 'North America's most westerly highway point'. 

 

Today we saw a moose & eagle at Anchor Point, and halibut & salmon at Homer.

Day 46 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska 6/27/14 - Travel to Ninilchik, AK

This morning we left at 8:00 to travel to Ninilchik (which is southwest of Anchorage).  We will be staying in this area for several days because this is where we will be doing some halibut & salmon fishing.

On the way to Ninilichik we saw 2 black bears along the edge of a lake near the Russian River.  We also saw a cow moose and 2 calves.  After dinner tonight we went for a ride and saw another cow moose and 2 calves not too far from the campground that we are staying at.  A guy at the campground said he saw a moose and two young ones walk through the campground a day or two ago so it could very well be the ones we saw just down the road.  Bob was able to get a picture of the cow moose.

We saw the Spencer Glacier today on our trip.

I took several pictures of the beautiful mountains with clouds floating around them at Turnagain Arm & Cook Inlet.  It was cloudy & misting rain.

We noticed a bunch of fishermen in the Russian River with their waders on salmon fishing.  It looked like a busy place so hopefully they are catching some salmon.

There was a lot of boats on the Kenai River.

We located and arrived at the Country Boy Campground in Ninilchik early this afternoon.   We got set up and all met at Chuck & Kathy's camper for happy hour at 4:00.

Ginger & Jesse fixed dinner tonight; Jesse grilled brats & hot dogs and Ginger fixed potato salad, cucumber/tomato salad & baked beans.  After dinner, we took a ride to the Cook Inlet to watch the fishing boats return to shore.  On the way, we stopped to look at some halibut some people caught. We were too late for that, only seeing a couple of small boats come in.  The fisherman or charter companys evidently can throw the fish scraps at an area along the Cook Inlet.  There were lots of sea gulls and eagles at that area, which we could see from a distance.  There are a lot of eagles around here.

On the opposite side of Cook Inlet, even though it was quite cloudy we could see the Chigmit Mountains (part of the Aleutian Range) and could also see a volcano.  There are several volcanoes in that area. (I hope it doesn't erupt while we are here....yikes!!!)

That's about it for the day.  Hopefully we will have some luck fishing in this area.  There are numerous charter companies in the area, so we will be lining something up in the near future.

Day 45 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska - 6/26/14 Another Rainy Day in Palmer, AK

I woke up to rain again this morning and it was cloudy most all day.  We are going to be moving on tomorrow morning so I will have a little something to write about.  I guess that means our rig will be getting all dirty going down the wet highway.  It has looked so nice this past week...all clean and shiny.

Bob filled up the truck with diesel today (23.01 gal x $4.249=$ 99.01) & I picked up a few more grocery items since we are going to be going to less populated area and staying for a while...trying to avoid paying any higher prices than we have to...groceries are getting so high; really don't know how families can make it financially these days.

Our grandchildren, Kolton & Terryn, called us today and talked to both of us.  We sure do miss those rascals.  We need to get busy sightseeing again so I don't get homesick.

I was the cook today.  I fixed chicken/rice casserole & buttered peas and Bob fixed a guacamole salad that he saw a recipe for on facebook.  The salad was yummy and tasted so summer-like.  He did good.

Day 44 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska 6/25/14 - Rain All Day in Palmer AK

It has been raining or misting all day here in Palmer, AK and it is still raining as I write this blog.  We did not go anywhere or do anything; it was just one of those days we opted to stay indoors.

I added some pictures to some of my past blogs.  We are going to look into having our blog printed to book form after our journey is over.

I appreciate and enjoy the beauty in flowers, foliage, trees, etc.  If I see something that catches my eye, I will stop and take pictures if I have my camera handy.  I think it brings me back to the days when I had a huge yard and enjoyed growing flowers, taking care of the yard work, and just being outside soaking up the sun. I would spend hours doing yard work, and enjoyed doing it.  I found it very therapeutic.

Since I don't have anything to post today, I am going to post some of the pictures I've taken.
