Day 33 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska - 6/14/14 Riverboat Discovery Boat Tour

Today, we had reservations to go on a 3 hour Sternwheeler Riverboat Discovery Boat Tour down the Chena River.

It was a very organized tour which made it even more enjoyable and informative.  The boat stopped upstream in the river for a while at a dog kennel where they train dogs to be sled dogs. One of the trainers there told us about the training process.  They train them pulling a 4-wheeler ATV during the summer time. He and the dogs demonstrated how they do it.

Then while we were going down the river, we had a small bush plane land on the water close by and he took off on the water and ascended in the air.   He did that a couple of times.

There are a lot of private planes and private airstrips in Alaska as that is the way they can get around easily. There are not a lot of highways in Alaska, so that makes owning a plane more of a necessity than just a want.

We also stopped and was given a  guided walking tour of  frontier living of an Athabascan Indian village.

This is a full body moose mount.

We saw some caribou along the river.

If these old boats could talk...bet there would be a lot of stories.

"The Pump House" ... a nice restaurant on the river.

There were some beautiful homes and cabins on the river.

This house appears to be living off the grid which seems to be quite common in Alaska.

A interesting boat..(I mean house).

It was a great day on the Chena River!!!

Have a good day!!
