Day 4 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska 5/16/14 (Sightseeing Crazy Horse & Custer State Park in South Dakota)

Today we went sightseeing.  We left mid-morning and went to Crazy Horse.  We watched the movie about it which was real interesting.  It is still work in progress.  Korczak, was the Sculptor, began work on the mountain in 1948. Prior to that, he worked for the sculptor that did Mount Rushmore.  After his death in 1982, his wife and many of his large family has taken over the massive project.

As you can see below, it will be many, many, many years before it will be completed, if ever.

There was a interesting museum of Indians there to go through as well as gift shops. That isn't Pocahontas standing in front of the tipi below......it's Ginger!!

After we finished touring Crazy Horse, we went to a nearby town (Hill City) and ate lunch at Bumpin' Buffalo Bar & Grill.  The food was good and the guys enjoyed a cold one on tap.

We, then, drove to Custer State Park to see all the free-roaming animals.  We were all snapping photos and enjoyed seeing all the different animals and beautiful South Dakota scenery.

These two guys got to playing a little rough with each other.

Burros run wild.

Jesse shared some of his Mexican hard candy with the wild burro that walked up to the truck.  He would of stayed right there, but Jesse ran out of candy to give him.

I think he's got a sweet tooth.

This little gray burro was my favorite......such a cutey!!!

There was quite a large herd of elk on a hillside.

                                                                    a buck antelope

prairie dogs

looks like a little family of prairie dogs... so cute & fun to watch

                                                              some female antelope

big horn sheep crossed in front of us

                                                                   mule deer

We at late lunch in Hill City and walked around the area for a while.  I love artistic metal sculptures like the ones below...very creatively done.

Our day was very enjoyable.  Love seeing all the wild animals roaming free.  I would highly recommend people visiting this area ...... beautiful country!!!

  4. I'm sure Crazy Horse Monument has progress since I was there 40 years ago, but it sure doesn't look like it has progressed much.
