Day 19 of Our RV Travels to Canada & Alaska - 5/31/14 Travel from Fort Nelson to Toad River (Canada)

This morning we were hooking up the rig and were leaving the park at Fort Nelson at 8:50 am.  We are traveling on the Alaska Highway, but we are still in Canada.

Not too far down the highway, Jesse and Ginger radio'ed to us that there was a black bear on the right. Jesse and Ginger are leading the way today.  We slow down and pull over; spotting the bear.

Wow!! We like that kind of excitement early on into the travels....maybe we will see lots of wildlife today.
That bear disappears into the woods.  Along the highway, we pass some roadkill....a moose and something else.  Bob and I spotted another bear on the left side far back into a clearing.  We didn't stop to get pictures of it because it was far away.  We all saw something run across the highway in front of us which was more of a tan/light brown but none of us got a good enough look at it...we all thought it moved like a bear (but it wasn't a black bear).

Further down the highway, Jesse radio'd us to advise us of a momma black bear and two baby cubs on the right near the highway.  So we spot them, slow down and get pulled over just to where the momma bear is just a few yards from our front passenger door.  We took a couple of pics and got brave enough to open the window to take better pics.  The momma knew we were there but was eating away at the grass.  The two cubs were further away; closer to the woods.  They were playing around and finally got brave enough to move in closer to momma.

This is when we first saw the momma & cubs.

The momma goes back  near the woods to where the cubs are at.
Then, momma decides to go back near the highway where we were parked to eat some more of that tasty grass.

The cubs are a little hesitant to come any closer to the highway & us.

The little cubs were so small and so cute....wish my grandkids were here to experience this.

I rolled the window up a couple of times as she was invading my safety area.
The specks you see on the momma are mosquitoes....we had soooo many mosquitoes in our truck from having the windows rolled down.

Now, momma moves up onto the side of the highway; I think she is wanting in our camper.

I think she's sniffing it out.

Like momma, like baby....the two cubs get curious or possibly didn't want to get too far from momma.

The momma checks out the driver side of the camper/truck.

She walks up closer to the driver (Bob).

Here, in this pic, the momma is trying to get one of the baby cubs out from under the truck...that baby wasn't so sure it wanted to get out from under that warm truck.

Momma decided the grass is greener on the other side.

The cubs follow momma and go to other side too.

One of the cubs tried to nurse.

This momma bear and baby cub sighting made our day.... we enjoy seeing animals we don't normally see around home.

At Mile 375 we pulled into the Tetsa River Services & Campground; not to camp, but to go in their little store/gift shop to purchase their homemade cinnamon buns that they are well known for.  This is a third generation  business first opening in 1942.  At $5.00 each for one large bun (right out of the oven), we only bought one each.  We sat at a table there in the shop and enjoyed them with coffee & water.

We all got a chuckle when we saw this sewer hose boom on a camper parked at Tetsa.

After eating that large cinnamon bun, we were 'on the road again'.  Bob and I saw a nice caribou along the highway just in the woods.  We saw another caribou earlier while traveling but was unable to get a picture.

We were driving in the mountains and at one point there was snow on the mountain and a lake was mostly covered with ice.

As we were coming around a curve along the mountain, we saw stone sheep on the highway.  There were five to six of them.  They are neat looking with their horns.

Some other sights we saw today:

Bob told me that this logging machine grabs a cut down tree, and as it is fed through the machine it cuts off all the limbs and when done, places it on the stack with others.

This is a fairly good size beaver damn that we saw.

We arrived at today's destination, Toad River Lodge, at approx. 12:30 pm.  Inside on the ceilings is a collection of over 8,000 hats.  We asked for sites next to the lake.  (30 amp/full hook-up/cable/WiFi at $30.45/night x 2 = $60.90Cap)  Since it is more like "country camping", we decided to stay here two nights.

 Reflection Lake....view from our site

Planning ahead, we took some catfish out of our freezer to thaw yesterday, .......so,  what better place to have a fish fry!!!  Bob was the cook and it was so tasty.  Jesse gathered wood and made a warm fire.

We sat outside until we started getting chilled, so Ginger and I both went in.  I was anxious to work on my blog.  While sitting at the dining table working on my blog,  I saw something that appeared to be much larger than a duck out in the lake.  I asked Bob to look and he said it looked like the head of a moose.  We both grabbed our cameras and ran outside.  Sure enough, there was a moose walking across the lake.  It is evidently shallow; at least where the moose was walking.  A small crowd gathered watching him walk across the lake.

Wow, this has been a great day...full of excitement.  I can't wait to see what is in store for tomorrow.
Bob & I both took some pictures of the sunset.....absolutely breathtaking!!!

Hope you are enjoying our pictures and stories.  We are having the time of our life.  I will post more pictures tomorrow.
