Day 28 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska - 6/09/2014 Leaving Dawson City Y.T. to TOK, Alaska

Day  28 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska - 6/09/2014 Leaving Dawson City Y.T. to TOK, AK

This morning we left Klondike River Campground at 8:00 and traveled to Dawson City to get on the ferry to cross the Yukon River.  Hope we don’t sink!!!  They put our truck and our 5th Wheel,  and another truck and 5th Wheel on the ferry side by side.

Well, we made it across …. no problems.  Hope the rest of today’s travels are uneventful also.

We traveled the 'Top-of-the-World' Highway.  We were on the road for 8 hours today and averaged a speed of 25 mph.   The condition of the road was not so good, to say the least, so we traveled slow.

At 10:05 (Alaska time) we made it to and through the Alaska border/customs with no problems.  Basically,he looked at our passports and asked what we were bringing in from Canada, and if we had any firearms.

We are finally in ALASKA!!!!
I got to add another state sticker to our RV Travel Map.

It was exciting to finally be in Alaska, but we were not exactly happy with the highway. The first 12 miles after going through the border was terrible.

Here are some pics of scenery I took today.  I guess animals don't like bad roads either because we did not see any today.

We continued traveling and planned to stop in Chicken, Alaska.  We stopped at a campground  there to see
what kind of hookups they had and if they had WiFi.  They didn't have what we wanted so we decided to go ahead and drive another couple of hours to TOK as they have several campgrounds there.  They did have some nice caribou and moose racks, bear rug mount, and a wolverine mount.

The roads were a little better from Chicken to TOK.  We pulled in to TOK RV Village and decided to spend 2 nights.  ($48.37 Pull-Thru/Full Hookup 50 amp/Cable TV/2 Hrs. Free WiFi  x 2 nights = $96.74 Cap w/Good Sam Disc.)

A couple of hours after we got to the campground, we walked next door  to Fast Eddy's Restaurant.  It is a busy place and the food was good.

Total Miles Traveled Today = 200

Have a good night!!!

  2. We went over The Top of The World Highway last year. My take on the road into Alaska: It is 40 miles from the boarder to Chicken. The first 14 miles were under construction, the last 10 miles were horrible. So other than the first 14 miles the last 10 and the middle 15, The road wasn't too bad. Wen I asked the boarder agent how the road was, his answer was worse than what you've been on so far. Just go slow and enjoy.
