Day 55 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska 7/06/14 - Road Trip to Soldotna & Kasilof

Last night after dinner we decided to fix a big breakfast this morning.  We were going to start cooking at 8:00 but Bob got a little ahead of his self and almost had it ready by 8:00 when Ginger & Jesse arrived.  He fixed fried jowl, potato patties, & eggs; Janet fixed orange julius and toast.  It was a good way to start out the morning but also made us sleepy.  After eating and talking about what we were going to do today, Ginger & Jesse went back to their RV.  I did dishes and didn't get sat down when Jesse had some ideas of places to go see.  So, when we were all ready, we piled in Bob's truck and were on our way to Soldotna.

First, we went to Alaska Centennial State Park in Soldotna to check out their "boardwalk"  that runs parallel to the Kenai River.  It has 650 feet of boardwalk and 13 river access stair units, as well as 176 campsites. There were several fishermen on the river's edge trying their luck at salmon fishing.  We walked the boardwalk and went down several of the stair units to check out the river.  The camping there looked like a maize...not real easy to get a big rig in; but there was a few sites that would be manageable.  They do not have any hookups.

After we left the state park, we went to the Soldotna Homesteading Museum.    It has buildings that were moved to this museum area...they were Homesteading cabins.  In 1947 the Federal Government opened up the Soldotna area to homesteading, with a preference given to veterans.  At that time Soldotna was an uninhabited forest.  Most homesteads were 160 acres which created quite a distance between neighbors and loneliness.  The homesteaders built and sold to others, creating a community strung along the Sterling Highway and Kenai Spur road.

While in the museum, a bear came in the
opened door and grabbed Bob...they
wrestled for several minutes............the bear won.

The mosquitoes were awful at the homestead museum but they had a few pretty flowers.

We also went to Kasilof to a museum.

This cabin was roofed with material they received to
can salmon with.

We also drove to Kalifornsky Beach to watch the locals catch salmon with nets but when we got there they were not fishing.  Some of the people there was breaking down camp and getting ready to leave.

That was our day, here in Alaska.
