Day 67 of Our RV Journey to Canada & Alaska 7/18/14 - Went to Kenai Fjords National Park to View the Exit Glacier & Seward Boat Harbor

Late this morning, we all got in Bob's truck and went to the Kenai Fjords National Park to view the Exit Glacier. We hiked to it and got real close.  There was another steep trail that went to the top of the glacier but we didn't do that one.

notice the two below picture have chunks breaking off the glacier

How a glacier forms?

We took Jesse & Ginger to their RV after we got back, and Bob and I went to the post office, ATM, and rode around in Seward for a few minutes.

Later, we all met at our picnic table to eat early dinner.  Ginger made some really good wraps with lettuce, bacon, chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, swiss & provolone cheese, and ranch dressing in them. She served chips to go with them.

After we ate, we walked to the Seward Boat Harbor to watch the catch of the day come in.  We each found a chair to sit in so we just sat there at the harbor and watched the fishermen bring in wheelbarrows of fish that were caught today.  They must have a ongoing halibut contest here because there is a board hanging up and right now a guy from Russia is in top place catching a 312.2 pounder, and second place is a guy from Missouri that caught a 260.6 pounder.  The board list the Top 10 so far.

salmon, pacific cod & halibut

the brown fish in the middle is ling cod

the big halibut on the hoist weighed in at 67 lbs.

The harbor has a large fish cleaning station.  The fish waste gets thrown in the middle trough and drops down to some kind of boat that catches it and at various times of the day that boat takes off into the bay and empties the fish waste into the bay.  When that happens, you wouldn't believe the number
of sea gulls, etc. that are following that boat....wouldn't want to be the
person to take that boat out in the bay.

see below the caged in area that is a boat of some kind
that the fish waste drops down into to be disposed of
later in the bay
